Las comunidades de la provincia, incluyendo sus ecosistemas costero-marinos, son altamente vulnerables a los impactos del cambio clim\u00e1tico, en particular al aumento de la intensidad y frecuencia de los fen\u00f3menos meteorol\u00f3gicos extremos (lluvias torrenciales, tormentas tropicales, huracanes, inundaciones y sequ\u00edas), el aumento del nivel del mar, la alteraci\u00f3n de los patrones de lluvia y el aumento de las temperaturas.<\/p>\n<p>Monte Cristi province is home to 6,072 ha of mangroves representing 45.6% of all mangroves in the Dominican Republic. Climate change-derived impacts exacerbate the stress that unsustainable upland production practices and land development place on fragile coastal areas. Consequently, the ecosystems\u2019 protective role of buffering and reducing local risks and impacts from storms, droughts and sea-level rise is declining. This, coupled with a relatively high illiteracy rate (reaching 20-25% of the population), there is little awareness within the farming communities about the importance of mangroves and their role in protecting this vital ecosystem.The \u201cMangroves for development -Securing livelihoods and climate resilience in the Caribbean\u201d project implemented by Centro Agron\u00f3mico Tropical de Investigaci\u00f3n y Ense\u00f1anza (CATIE) aims to utilize a combination of approaches and the inclusion of social, productive, ecological, and financial dimensions of the Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) to combat the problems in Monte Cristi. This EbA approach provides a response to multiple current threats challenging the ecological stability and productive livelihoods in the area.<\/p>\n<p>Nuestro objetivo es reducir los riesgos clim\u00e1ticos y fortalecer la resiliencia social, ecol\u00f3gica y econ\u00f3mica en los paisajes costero-marinos y la matriz terrestre adyacente en la provincia noroccidental de Monte Cristi, Rep\u00fablica Dominicana. Nuestro enfoque de AbE reconoce que la gesti\u00f3n insostenible de los ecosistemas est\u00e1 acelerando la degradaci\u00f3n de los manglares, reduciendo la fertilidad y la productividad del suelo, y, por lo tanto, erosionando la provisi\u00f3n de bienes y servicios ecosist\u00e9micos que, de otro modo, ser\u00edan \u00fatiles para mantener la resiliencia al cambio clim\u00e1tico. Las intervenciones centradas exclusivamente en la franja de manglares tienen pocas probabilidades de \u00e9xito a largo plazo; por ello, utilizamos un enfoque ecosist\u00e9mico m\u00e1s amplio a escala del paisaje que integra las dimensiones sociales, productivas, ecol\u00f3gicas y financieras.
