Years after the initial devastation of extreme weather events, hidden marine debris—such as sunken construction materials, fiberglass, submerged household appliances, and entangled fishing gear—continued to severely threaten local marine life and the safety of maritime navigation. Executed by the specialized disaster response organization IDEA Relief with a $15,000 grant, the project mobilized expert teams to conduct systematic, underwater clean-up operations. The initiative focused on physically extracting medium and large-scale toxic debris from priority coral reefs, critical seagrass beds, and high-traffic coastal zones. By meticulously clearing these submerged hazards, the project immediately halted the ongoing physical degradation of the marine habitat. This aggressive environmental intervention successfully restored the pristine natural conditions required for both the recovery of the local commercial fisheries and the revitalization of Green Turtle Cay’s highly lucrative, nature-based tourism economy.

This targeted, high-impact disaster recovery project addressed the lingering, severe environmental hazards plaguing the coastal and nearshore ecosystems of Green Turtle Cay.
