The reef responders will strengthen the region’s ability to protect and restore coral reef ecosystems following hurricanes.

The training was conducted in Jamaica, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Lucia, and the Dominican Republic. Implemented in close collaboration with the pilot-countries’ National Conservation Trust Funds, the training sessions brought together participants from government agencies, marine managed areas, conservation organizations, academia, and community groups.

A total of 75 participants successfully completed the training and are now part of a growing regional network of reef responders equipped to support emergency response efforts following future hurricanes. The training curriculum was based on the Response Protocol for the Rescue of Coral Reefs Affected by Hurricanes, developed by the Mesoamerican Reef Fund (MAR Fund) and adapted for implementation in Caribbean island states. Participants engaged in practical exercises involving reef assessment methodologies, underwater stabilization techniques, use of emergency response equipment, incident coordination procedures, and safety protocols.

Caribbean Biodiversity Fund CEO Karen McDonald Gayle shared her support for the training and participants, “We at the CBF understand and appreciate the value of healthy coral reefs within our region especially as we continue to face increasing climate-related challenges. With 75 dedicated reef responders, these 4 Caribbean countries can rescue their coral reefs faster leading to less loss over time. That is our aim at the CBF to ensure that our region’s people and nature thrive.”

The initiative was implemented in partnership with the National Conservation Trust Fund of Jamaica (NCTFJ), the Saint Lucia National Conservation Fund (SLUNCF), the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Conservation Fund (SVGCF), and Fondo MARENA of the Dominican Republic.

As climate-related threats continue to intensify across the Caribbean, strengthening preparedness and emergency response capacity has become increasingly important for safeguarding coral reefs and the communities that depend on them. The 75 newly trained reef responders represent a critical line of defense for the Caribbean’s vital natural infrastructure.

Financial support for the R3FM project is provided by a group of international partners, including German Cooperation through KfW, the InsuResilience Solutions Fund, the Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance (ORRAA) with the financial support of the Government of Canada through the Federal Department of Environment and Climate Change, the Global Environment Facility (implemented through UNEP), the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and the French Facility for Global Environment (FFEM), and Global Affairs Canada.

Participants engage in an interactive group activity at Reef Emergency Response Training in Jamaica.
