Caribbean Biodiversity Fund, 18 December, 2023<\/b> \u2013 The CBF concludes 2023 by announcing an additional EUR 10 million in funding for its Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) Facility, courtesy of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety, and Consumer Protection (BMUV) International Climate Initiative (IKI), facilitated through KfW, the German Development Bank.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe CBF has over the last seven years created an <\/span>EbA Facility with tangible results. We are pleased that this has garnered recognition, leading to continued support that will bolster our commitment to foster regional capacity building in ecosystem-based adaptation and contribute to global climate change adaptation goals,<\/span><\/i>\u201d stated CBF CEO Karen McDonald Gayle.<\/span><\/p>\n

To date, CBF\u2019s EbA Facility has allocated USD 46 million across 34 projects spanning 11 Caribbean nations. These projects primarily focus on enhancing coastal and marine ecosystems, including mangroves, wetlands, coral reefs, and coastal watersheds, benefitting 40 marine managed areas.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Ulrike Krauss, CBF\u2019s Climate Change\/EbA Facility Program Manager, expressed enthusiasm for the on-the-ground success of the Facility.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cConsider Haiti\u2019s Community Organized Relief Effort (CORE) as an example. Despite challenges, this project fostered community ownership, aiding 340 direct beneficiaries, supporting 274 sustainable livelihoods, and establishing 4 environmental clubs involving 69 students. Moreover, it revitalised 257 hectares of ecosystems, achieving an 85% survival rate for replanted mangroves,\u201d Dr. Krauss remarked.<\/span><\/p>\n

This new funding will pave the way for the 5<\/span>th<\/span> Call for Proposals under the CBF\u2019s EbA Facility and will extend the impact of the CBF, by promoting coordination and scaling EbA solutions until at least 2030.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe EbA Facility\u2019s successful project implementation across numerous Caribbean islands, despite cultural diversities and linguistic variations, is commendable,\u201d remarked Montserrat Acosta-Morel, Chairperson of the EbA Facility Committee overseeing the Facility.<\/span><\/p>\n

Looking forward to the upcoming 5<\/span>th<\/span> Call for Proposals, the CBF anticipates continued collaboration with regional partners, grantees, and other stakeholders. The unwavering commitment to replicating and scaling successful EbA approaches underscores our goal to build a more sustainable and climate-resilient future for the Caribbean region.<\/span><\/p>\n
