But safeguarding this natural legacy requires strategic investment, strong governance, and long-term collaboration. T<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dnctf.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he Dominica National Conservation Trust Fund (DNCTF)<\/a>, with support from the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund (CBF) and other partners, is rising to this challenge\u2014delivering targeted solutions and building institutional capacity to secure Dominica\u2019s environment for generations to come.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Strengthening Governance and Operational Systems<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2024, the DNCTF achieved a major milestone with the approval of its foundational governance documents and internal policies, aligning with the international <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redlac.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/CFAPracticeStandards2020.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Standards of Practice for Conservation Trust Funds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These efforts underscore the Fund\u2019s commitment to transparency, accountability, and institutional efficiency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To enhance strategic decision-making, the DNCTF established a Technical Advisory Committee (TAC), bringing expert voices into project design and implementation. These improvements, supported by the CBF, are helping the Fund better manage resources and attract future investment.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14292\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14292\" style=\"width: 2560px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14292 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/caribbeanbiodiversityfund.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/DNTCF-CBF-Workshop-optimized-scaled.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1441\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14292\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Tanja Lieuw | Group picture of the CBF led field visit as part of the capacity building workshop held in Dominica, April 2024<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><b>Building Regional Partnerships and Shared Learning<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The DNCTF has played an active role in regional knowledge exchange and technical collaboration through initiatives supported by CBF and other development partners:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Caribbean Regional Architecture for Biodiversity (CRAB) Project<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: DNCTF participated in regional discussions and gender assessments that informed the development of its Gender Policy in late 2024.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>USAID Sustainable Financing Program<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: DNCTF hosted a three-day workshop in Dominica, building capacity among peer NCTFs from St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Kitts and Nevis, and Suriname.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Projet des organisations carib\u00e9ennes pour un environnement r\u00e9silient (CORE)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: With support from CBF and CUSO International, DNCTF engaged volunteers to support conservation project development and implementation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Capital-Raising Strategy Collaboration<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: DNCTF contributed to a regional capital strategy effort led by the Bahamas Protected Areas Fund (BPAF), aimed at strengthening long-term financial resilience.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14293\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14293\" style=\"width: 2560px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14293 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/caribbeanbiodiversityfund.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/CBF-DNCTF-KT-optimized-scaled.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14293\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">CBF team, including our CBF Chair, Karolin Troubetzkoy (third from right) and representatives of the Government of Dominica and the DNCTF, April 2024<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><b>Expanding Conservation Leadership Across the Caribbean Region<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through participation in major regional and international events, DNCTF leadership is helping elevate Dominica\u2019s conservation agenda and influence. Notable highlights include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The RedLAC 2024 Congress and pre-congress workshop in Saint Lucia, where the DNCTF shared financing models for Caribbean conservation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Gulf Caribbean Fisheries Institute (GCFI77) Conference in Guadeloupe, showcasing local innovations in marine resource management.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sargassum Conference in Grenada, where the DNCTF\u2019s Vice-Chair contributed strategies on sargassum mitigation to support Caribbean ecosystems and economies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These platforms, often supported by the CBF, ensure Dominica\u2019s voice is part of shaping the region\u2019s conservation future.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Launching Grantmaking and Funding Access in 2025<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With technical guidance from the CBF, the DNCTF has finalized its Grant-Making Framework and is preparing to launch its first call for proposals in March 2025. This marks a new chapter in the Fund\u2019s evolution, offering direct financial support for civil society organizations, community-led projects, and scientific research aligned with national conservation priorities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In parallel, the DNCTF is working to build a long-term financial sustainability strategy to support a stable, well-resourced pipeline of conservation investments.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Embedding Gender Equity in Conservation<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In January 2025, the DNCTF participated in the Gender Mainstreaming Workshop in Grenada, hosted through the CORE project and financed by CUSO International and Global Affairs Canada. These efforts, including the development of the DNCTF\u2019s own Gender Policy, are helping embed equity and inclusion into all aspects of the Fund\u2019s operations. This ensures that women and marginalized communities are empowered as key environmental stewards.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Perspectives d&#039;avenir<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the DNCTF enters its next phase of growth, its strategic focus remains clear\u2014improve conservation impact, secure long-term financing, and strengthen community partnerships.
