Collectively, the entries told powerful visual stories of how Caribbean people, species, and landscapes are confronting today\u2019s environmental challenges and reshaping their future.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15296\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15296\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15296 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/caribbeanbiodiversityfund.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Edson-Mendez_CRAB-Project-Contest-Winner_PAmateur-Category.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15296\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A powerful reminder of how natural disasters shape daily life in Belize. This winning image, captured by amateur photographer Edson Mendez, illustrates the vulnerability of Caribbean people and ecosystems to hurricanes and flooding\u2014and the urgent call for climate resilience.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 data-start=\"1612\" data-end=\"1660\">From Belize to Trinidad: The Winning Images<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1662\" data-end=\"2064\">In the Amateur category, Belizean photographer Edson Mendez captured first place with a photograph submitted under the theme <em data-start=\"1791\" data-end=\"1867\">\u201cHow natural disasters are impacting me, nature, and my Caribbean people.\u201d<\/em> Judges praised the image for its emotional resonance and technical precision, noting how it illustrated the vulnerability of coastal communities while underscoring the urgency of climate action.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2066\" data-end=\"2465\">In the Professional category, Renaldo Matadeen of Trinidad and Tobago took top honors with a submission under the theme <em data-start=\"2190\" data-end=\"2315\">\u201cAdapt or Die: How our Caribbean people, species, and landscapes are adapting to biodiversity or climate change stressors.\u201d<\/em> His bold composition and vivid storytelling offered a compelling look at resilience and adaptation in the face of mounting environmental pressures.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2467\" data-end=\"2742\">\u201cThese images reflect the urgency of protecting our environment and the resilience of our people,\u201d said Karen McDonald Gayle, CEO of the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund. \u201cArt and storytelling amplify conservation and help sustain our shared vision for a resilient Caribbean.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2744\" data-end=\"2797\">The Power of Visual Storytelling<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2799\" data-end=\"2986\">Entries were evaluated by a panel of judges drawn from both conservation and the creative industries, based on originality, relevance to the theme, technical quality, and visual impact.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2988\" data-end=\"3228\">\u201cThis contest is a testament to the Caribbean\u2019s creativity and deep connection to nature,\u201d said Theresa Sanderson, CRAB Project Manager. \u201cPhotographers turned lived experience into images that inspire action and amplify local voices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3230\" data-end=\"3603\">The contest is a flagship communications initiative under the CRAB Project (2022\u20132027), which is funded by the Agence Fran\u00e7aise de D\u00e9veloppement (AFD) and the Fonds Fran\u00e7ais pour l\u2019Environnement Mondial (FFEM).
