The workshop was hosted by the Saint Lucia National Conservation Fund (SLUNCF) and brought together National Conservation Trust Funds (NCTFs) from across the region, including the Dominica National Conservation Trust Fund (DNCTF) and the Saint Vincent and theGrenadines Conservation Fund (SVGCF). This strategic engagement forms part of the CRAB Project’s broader objective tostrengthen conservation finance mechanisms, institutional capacity, and regional collaboration among NCTFs. The workshop provided a structured platform for knowledge exchange, focusing on grant-making procedures, monitoring, evaluation andlearning (MEL), governance, sustainable financing, and reporting frameworks aligned with CBF standards. A key highlight of the exchange was the field-based learning component on April 17, which provided participants with direct exposure to innovative, community-driven conservation and livelihood initiatives across Saint Lucia.

The Facility is a CBF project supported by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN) through the International Climate Initiative (IKI) and KfW Development Bank with a contribution of EUR 55 million. The CBF appreciates not only the German investment, but also their readiness to continue support for EbA approaches in our region.

In the Caribbean, particularly the Windward Islands, sea temperatures were the hottest ever recorded at over 31C. The level of heat stress measured in Degree Heating Weeks reached 25, which according to NOAA translates as a “Risk of near complete mortality” from coral bleaching.Our restoration teams in St Lucia and St Vincent and Grenadines have been doing extensive surveys looking for elkhorn and staghorn survivors – and it’s not looking good.  The sea has been too rough to survey the windward coasts, so we hope we will find some there when it is calmer. In our nursery in Saint Lucia, we have some surviving elkhorn and staghorn genotypes because we moved them into deeper water, but almost all our outplants and source colonies have died.  To make matters worse, last year’s coral bleaching comes on the heels of the terrible SCTLD coral disease, Category 5 Hurricane Beryl, and the severe bleaching of 2023.

By funding pilot projects in developing countries, it takes concrete action to preserve biodiversity, the climate, land, water, and the ozone layer, and combat pollution. Its ambition: to test solutions, prove their impact, and scale them up. A partner of public, private, and civil society stakeholders, the FFEM has supported more than 400 projects in 120 countries, mostly in Africa and the Mediterranean, contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals.
