Montserrat

A volcanic island with forested hills, clear waters and wildlife found nowhere else. Montserrat's natural wealth is the foundation for a resilient future.

A living island

Montserrat has been shaped by its volcano. Since the Soufrière Hills eruptions began in 1995, life on the island has moved north, and the forests of the Centre Hills have become even more important.

These hills hold most of the island’s remaining forest and much of its fresh water. They are home to the Montserrat oriole, the national bird, which lives nowhere else on Earth, along with rare reptiles and amphibians.

Around the coast, reefs and seagrass support fishing and protect the shore, while the land supplies volcanic aggregates and fertile soil. Looked after well, these natural assets can support jobs, food and resilience for generations.

Looking ahead

The CBF does not yet fund projects in Montserrat, but the island is part of the region we serve and its ecosystems matter to the whole Eastern Caribbean.

We welcome conversations with government, community groups and organisations working to protect Montserrat’s forests, reefs and wildlife. To talk about future collaboration, get in touch with our team.
