The Caribbean region is home to rich biodiversity and vibrant coastal ecosystems, which are vital to local economies, livelihoods, and cultural heritage. However, these ecosystems face increasing threats from climate change, unsustainable resource use, and biodiversity loss. In response, collaborative conservation financing mechanisms have emerged as essential tools to support grassroots and national efforts to protect and restore the region’s natural capital.

Conservation Trust Funds (CTFs) in the Caribbean have played a critical role in delivering long-term, sustainable financing for biodiversity and ecosystem management. Simultaneously, the Global Environment Facility’s Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP) has provided direct support to community-based and civil society-led conservation and climate resilience initiatives. Both mechanisms share a common vision: empowering local actors to deliver tangible environmental benefits through strategic, inclusive, and sustainable interventions.

Increasingly, collaboration between CTFs and the GEF SGP is proving to be a promising model for enhancing conservation impact, strengthening institutional capacity, and ensuring alignment with national and international environmental goals. These partnerships offer valuable opportunities for knowledge exchange, co-financing, and scaling up of successful initiatives.

Who is this event for?

This event is designed for National Conservation Trust Funds (NCTFs), implementing partners under the EbA and ACE Facilities, government agencies, regional conservation practitioners, and project teams involved in climate resilience and biodiversity management.

Why is this event being held?

The workshop aims to strengthen regional capacity for ecosystem-based adaptation by sharing lessons learned, presenting new project results, and fostering collaboration among stakeholders funded through the EbA Facility. It supports CBF’s commitment to advancing climate resilience across the Caribbean.

Objective

This panel aims to explore the evolving partnerships between Conservation Trust Funds and the GEF Small Grants Programme in the Caribbean. It will highlight successful collaboration models, discuss opportunities for greater alignment, and identify enabling conditions to strengthen joint efforts toward biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, and sustainable development.

Key Discussion Topics

  • The complementary roles of CTFs and GEF SGP in supporting conservation and community resilience.
  • Case studies showcasing successful collaboration models in the Caribbean.
  • Strategies for enhancing coordination and co-financing between CTFs and GEF SGP.
  • Opportunities to align joint programming with national biodiversity strategies and international frameworks (e.g., the Global Biodiversity Framework, SDGs, and climate commitments).
  • Challenges and lessons learned from current partnerships.
  • Vision for future collaboration to increase impact and scalability of local environmental initiatives.

Panel Outcomes

  1. Greater awareness of the value and potential of CTF–GEF SGP partnerships in the Caribbean
  2. Identification of practical steps to strengthen collaboration and alignment between the two mechanisms.
  3. Shared insights on improving sustainability, equity, and scalability of community-based conservation.
  4. Recommendations for policy and programmatic support at the national and regional levels.
