Nature-based Economies Program Fact Sheet

The Caribbean Biodiversity Fund’s (CBF) Nature-based Economies Program confronts the region’s severe marine pollution crisis through its Advancing Circular Economy (ACE) Facility, financed by the German Development Bank (KfW) on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). With the Caribbean Sea facing critical threats from uncollected waste and plastics that endanger marine life, mangroves, and local livelihoods, this five-year initiative will award competitive grants to NGOs, public institutions, academia, community-based organizations, and private sector partners across nine targeted island nations. Operating until 2028, the ACE Facility aims to fund up to 20 projects that apply circular economy principles—such as waste reduction, reuse, and recycling—to prevent and remove marine litter through investments in equipment and infrastructure, data generation, policy support, and consumer education.
