Ecosystem based risk reduction in coastal areas of Samaná and La Altagracia provinces of Dominican Republic

Community-led rehabilitation of coral, mangrove and forestry ecosystems in selected coastal areas and watersheds of Samaná and La Altagracia provinces aims to increase resilience of people, reduce floods risk and to protect biodiversity. Coral restoration employs hybrid solutions with sexual and asexual reproduction, and species diversification. More resilient coral reefs are expected to enhance fish availability, touristic appeal, and climate related risk reduction.

Following a ridge to reef (R2R) approach with sustainable agroforestry practices, the project is replicating successful experiences from other watersheds within the Dominican Republic, involving farmers’ organizations and community stakeholders. Restoration of the upper and mid watershed and riparian reforestation (live barriers) will reduce the impact of storms and floods in downstream communities, and in coastal areas.

Additional income from restored ecosystems, will incentivize people to participate in these EbA initiatives. Partnering with local businesses will enhance their willingness to implement mangrove live barriers in wetlands.
