Haiti, overcoming resource depletion challenges, now safeguards 20% of its marine environment. The Caribbean Biodiversity Fund supports Haiti in restoring ecosystems and promoting sustainable agriculture.

Our Work in Haiti

Haiti, a nation known for its enduring spirit, is also home to a remarkable tapestry of ecosystems. While facing historical challenges with natural resource depletion, Haiti has made significant strides in conservation efforts. Today, over 20% of its marine environment enjoys formal protection.

The Caribbean Biodiversity Fund (CBF) is proud to partner with Haiti to support these ongoing conservation efforts. Our collaborative focus areas include:

Restoring Haiti's Ecosystems

The CBF supports projects that revitalize degraded ecosystems in Haiti, promoting biodiversity recovery and a healthier environment for future generations.

Building a Sustainable Food System

We champion initiatives that safeguard and enhance agricultural practices in Haiti. This fosters a more resilient food system, ensuring long-term food security for Haitian communities.

Enhancing Resilience to Climate Change

The CBF supports projects that reduce the vulnerability of Haiti's economic and ecological systems to external shocks, such as climate change and natural disasters.

Key Achievements in Haiti

The CBF’s collaboration with Haiti has yielded significant progress, establishing a strong foundation for long-term conservation efforts:

2018: Establishment of the Fonds Haitien Pour La Biodiversité (FHB)

This critical milestone, achieved with CBF support, established a dedicated funding stream for vital conservation initiatives throughout Haiti. The FHB ensures long-term financial sustainability for protecting Haiti's unique biodiversity.

2018: Signing of the CBF Partnership Agreement

The formalization of our collaboration in 2018 solidified our commitment to working together with Haiti. This agreement established a framework for coordinated and impactful conservation efforts, maximizing the impact of our combined resources.

Total CBF Funding: $400,000

The CBF's dedicated financial resources have empowered local partners in Haiti and enabled the implementation of critical conservation projects that safeguard Haiti's irreplaceable ecosystems.

Extensive Network of Protected Areas

Haiti is strategically expanding its network of protected areas, with a particular focus on safeguarding its marine ecosystems. This expansion aims to ensure the long-term health of these vital habitats and the marine resources they provide.
Total Terrestrial Protected Areas
0
These protected areas safeguard a significant portion of Haiti’s diverse land ecosystems, providing vital habitat for native species.
Total Coastal and Marine Protected Areas
0
These areas play a critical role in protecting crucial marine habitats like coral reefs and seagrass meadows.
Protected Land Area
0 %
A commendable portion of Haiti’s landmass (2,357.9 km2) is under formal protection, ensuring the conservation of these vital ecosystems for future generations.
Protected Marine Area
0 %
While the marine protected area (1,883 km2) percentage is lower, the CBF is actively working with partners to develop a comprehensive strategy for marine conservation.
