Project Overview

Wave Attenuation: Natural Solutions with Elkhorn Coral (WANSEC): Exploring the Lattice Turbulence of Acropora Palmata Thickets in Wave Attenuation and Sediment Deposition as a Device for Coastal Protection

Jamaica, Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda

Duration36 Months
Total Project BudgetUSD 2,138,700.00
EbA Facility GrantUSD 2,000,000.00
Co-financingUSD 138,700.00

WANSEC tests and demonstrates how restoring reef-crest stands of elkhorn coral can improve habitat, reduce wave energy, and strengthen natural coastal protection. The regional project combines coastal-risk modelling, reefscape-scale restoration, adaptive-management tools, practitioner training, and policy engagement across Jamaica, Barbados, and Antigua and Barbuda.

Key Objectives

  • Model coastal hazards and the wave-reduction benefits of restored reef crests
  • Restore and enhance reef-crest habitats using elkhorn coral
  • Develop adaptive-management tools for coral restoration and coastal protection
  • Build stakeholder capacity and produce a framework for regional replication and policy support

Ecosystem Focus

Shallow reef crests, elkhorn coral thickets, coral reefs, beaches, and coastal communities exposed to erosion and flooding.
