Project Overview
Community-based Coastal Remediation in the Insular Caribbean’s Two Largest Nations: Cuba and the Dominican Republic
Cuba, Dominican Republic
This project built ecological and community resilience in Cuba and the Dominican Republic through mangrove restoration, coral propagation, Sargassum composting, and community-centered ecosystem-based adaptation planning. Technical exchange between the two countries strengthened restoration practice, while work with farmers and coastal communities supported sustainable livelihoods and reduced land-based pressures on marine ecosystems.
Key Objectives
- Restore degraded mangroves, coral reefs, and other coastal habitats
- Transfer and expand coral sexual-propagation and restoration techniques
- Develop community-centered ecosystem-based adaptation plans
- Convert Sargassum into useful compost and strengthen sustainable agricultural value chains
Ecosystem Focus
Mangroves, coral reefs, seagrass beds, beaches, agricultural watersheds, and connected coastal ecosystems.
Communities Involved
This project was implemented in the following communities and project areas:
- Communities near project sites in Cuba
- Communities near project sites in the Dominican Republic
- Farmers, restoration practitioners, and coastal resource users in both countries
Implementing Organizations
Lead Organization:
The Ocean Foundation (TOF)
The Ocean Foundation coordinated the bi-national restoration programme, technical exchange, community-based planning, and the development of practical coral, mangrove, and Sargassum solutions.
