Studies show that Caribbean countries are up to seven times more likely to experience a natural disaster than other states, and when one occurs, it can incur as much as six times more damage. In 2019, Hurricane Dorian ravaged The Bahamas costing the country USD 3.4 billion in damages. The CBF facilitated a special relief grant in 2020 valued at USD 1,260,000 to the Bahamas through The Bahamas Protected Areas Fund (BPAF) to aid recovery efforts after the impacts of Hurricane Dorian. This grant supported ecosystem impact assessments, ecosystem-based recovery effects (including protected areas infrastructure) and the provision of water purification systems and renewable energy initiatives. The BPAF successfully completed implementation of this grant in 2024 restoring critical mangrove and terrestrial ecosystems in the most impacted Bahamian islands. Funding for this special relief grant was contributed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development through the German Development Bank (USD 1.11 million), and administered by the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund (USD 150,000).
