Shyam Nokta
Director
Mr. Shyam Nokta is a leading natural resources, environment, and climate change specialist. He is the founder of Environmental Management Consultants Inc. (EMC), one of Guyana’s premier environmental service companies, and the non-profit EMC Foundation. Currently, he serves as Technical Advisor to the President of Guyana on climate change and biodiversity, Honorary Consul General to Norway, and Chair of the Protected Areas Trust Fund.
Previously, as Head of Guyana’s Office of Climate Change, Mr. Nokta played a pivotal role in developing the globally acclaimed Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS). He was also a principal negotiator for the landmark US$250 million Avoided Deforestation (REDD+) Partnership with Norway. A prominent figure in both conservation and the private sector, he has served as Chairman of the Protected Areas Commission, President of the GMSA, and currently serves as Vice President of AMCHAM Guyana.
Mr. Nokta holds an MSc in Environmental Assessment and Management with Distinction from Oxford-Brookes University. His pioneering work has earned him the 2020 Strait of Magellan Award and the 2022 Anthony Sabga Award for Caribbean Excellence.
