Project Overview

Clean River, Living Ocean: Circularity solutions to reduce waste flow in the Yaque del Norte River.

Dominican Republic

Duration 36 Months
Total Project Budget USD 2,666,550.80
ACE Facility Grant USD 1,999,913.10
Co-financing USD 666,637.70
The project aims to remove solid waste from the Yaque del Norte River before it reaches the Atlantic Ocean by combining innovative waste interception, improved management systems, and circular economy solutions. This project builds on Parley Dominican Republic’s proven pilot barrier that intercepts over 70 tons of waste annually. Through community collection routes, separation and recycling stations, a local collection center, strengthened monitoring, eco-design innovation, and education programs for teachers, students, and communities, the project reduces river pollution while fostering lasting behavior change to protect the Dominican Republic’s freshwater and marine ecosystems.

Key Objectives

  • Intercept solid waste before it reaches the ocean
  • Strengthen waste management systems and monitoring
  • Improve recycling and circular economy practices
  • Build education and long-term behavior change

Ecosystem Focus

This project focuses on the Yaque del Norte River system and connected coastal and marine ecosystems affected by solid waste leakage to the ocean.
