Puntacana Circular: Comprehensive Waste Management in the tourist area of Punta Cana to prevent pollution of rivers and beaches.
Dominican Republic
This project aims to prevent and reduce plastic and other waste pollution in beaches, tourist zones, communities, and protected areas in Punta Cana and Verón, where tourism is a vital economic driver. Through selective waste collection at the source and material recovery from hotels, the international airport, shopping areas, communities, and the Southeast Reef Marine Sanctuary, the initiative brings together private companies, civil society, and tourists to advance a circular economy. Aligned with the Dominican Republic’s General Law on Integrated Solid Waste Management, the project develops valorization strategies, decentralized solutions for low-value plastics, and public-private partnerships to keep waste out of rivers and coastal areas while creating jobs and environmental benefits.
This project targets coastal and marine ecosystems affected by tourism-related waste, including beaches, rivers, and the Southeast Reef Marine Sanctuary.
This project focuses on Punta Cana and Verón and engages hotels, the international airport, shopping areas, local communities, and visitors.
