Project Overview
Dramatically Scaling up Multi-species Coral Rehabilitation in Targeted Sites in the Dominican Republic as a Climate Change Adaptation Strategy
Dominican Republic
This project responded to intensifying climate threats to Punta Cana’s degraded coral reefs by establishing land-based multi-species coral nurseries and producing coral explants at scale. It combined reef rehabilitation, ecosystem monitoring, conservation enforcement, community-led fisheries management, and sustainable livelihood development through partnerships with tourism operators and local organizations.
Key Objectives
- Scale up multi-species coral propagation, nursery operations, and reef rehabilitation
- Strengthen reef monitoring, adaptive management, and marine conservation enforcement
- Create alternative livelihoods and technical training for fisher and coastal communities
- Build partnerships with tourism operators and local groups to support long-term reef resilience
Ecosystem Focus
Coral reefs and associated coastal and marine ecosystems in targeted areas of Punta Cana and eastern Dominican Republic.
