Project Description

(Hurricane Dorian Small and Medium Marine Debris Removal on Man-O-War, Abaco)

This project aimed to improve the health and resilience of the marine environment in Abaco following the devastation of Hurricane Dorian and the global COVID-19 pandemic. By restoring the visual and ecological integrity of the Marine Habitat Port area and clearing critical transport corridors, the initiative directly supported Abaco’s economic recovery and its status as a key tourism hub. The target was to remove 150 cubic yards of debris obstructing marine spaces, thereby enhancing safe navigation and aiding ecosystem regeneration.

Turning The Tide on Marine Debris

UNDP’s Turning the Tide on Marine Debris highlights a post-hurricane recovery effort in Jamaica that removed marine waste from mangroves, beaches, and fishing areas to restore coastal ecosystems and support local livelihoods. Through collaboration with government agencies, fishers, and volunteers, the initiative cleared debris, rehabilitated habitats, and strengthened community resilience—underscoring the importance of local action and cross-sector partnerships in tackling marine pollution.
