Mangroves in Bondeau commune and in Corail and Pestel, in the Grande Anse form a complex ecological system that has been severely impacted by climate change and anthropogenic actions. To protect these mangrove ecosystems, this project will build capacity and strengthen dynamic environmental management and improve livelihoods of local fishermen and farmers with the following: A. Agricultural and fisheries livelihoods will be strengthened with Ridge to Reef (R2R) with Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) towards reforestation of the most vulnerable lands along the ravines. Farmers will receive fruit tree seedlings and technical assistance to create a living green belt at the watershed level. The impact of this approach is two-fold – reduction of sedimentation of the mangroves below and increased incomes of farmers through watershed reforestation. B. Awareness and movement building activities will transform community members and leaders into environmental stewards that focus on the protection and sustainable management of natural resources. J/P HRO is implementing a similar initiative in the Nippes, funded by CBF. The first phase of this initiative is being adapted and replicated in Corail and Pestel and whilst it’s second phase will be adapted to regenerate Bondeau mangrove, strengthening environmental governance, and enhancing livelihoods with new income-generating activities. The project is expected to last for 36 months and will received a total of USD$2,000,000 from the EbA facility with no co-financing.
The resources for this project will be available soon.
After over a decade of providing sustainable financing for the Caribbean region, the CBF has directly or indirectly funded an estimated 100 projects and initiatives that implement effective conservation actions. This database provides details of those projects.
